Courtney’s Why
After two decades of dreaming, drafting, and drawing, it's finally time to share Super Scrubbles with the world — characters for a cause. This project has stayed so close to my heart because cancer is complicated, and so are the feelings that come with it, even as an adult. I wanted to give kids something I didn't have: a way to see those feelings reflected back, and to know they aren't alone in carrying them.
I don't have a life before cancer. It's all I've ever known. Growing up, cancer wasn't an event — it was the fabric of my childhood. Constant doctor appointments. Multiple surgeries. Chemo and radiation. Visiting the nurse's office for medication and catheterization during recess while my classmates played outside. As an adult, the long-term effects only became more apparent — emergency surgeries, a decade-long fertility journey, a constant reminder of how deeply cancer and its treatment had impacted me.
For years, I stayed quiet. I told myself I should just be grateful to be alive. Grateful enough not to talk about the side effects that never end, the worry that never fully goes away. But gratitude and grief can live in the same body. I just didn't feel brave enough to say so.
Then my treatment's side effects took my daughter's life, and everything I thought I understood about my own story changed. It was no longer just mine to carry quietly. I needed to become her voice, because she couldn't speak for herself.
Children deserve the chance to grow up. They deserve a life without long-term effects trailing behind them. They deserve hope. That's why I'm finally sharing my story, and the stories of so many other kids like me, through the Super Scrubbles - a world of big feelings, large imaginations, and shared journeys.
Two decades of dreaming is finally becoming something you can hold in your hands. The first Super Scrubbles bundle is now available to order, and it includes:
The first book: Goldie’s New Friend Nova - beginning of a cancer journey
A limited-edition first-book patch
The Stand Golden wristband
Thank you for your support and being here for the beginning!
